Tom Harden and Associates
Residential Addition & Renovation, Carlisle, MA. The owners wanted to expand and reconfigure their contemporary house to make it better fit how they live and work, and how they share living space with their extended family. They also wanted to improve the connection of the house to the wooded site and make it more energy-efficient. A series of design options were explored, and a design was chosen that enlarged the house without enlarging its footprint. The new design maintained the open-ness of the floor plan while providing better options for privacy and separation of spaces, and bringing in more natural light. Custom cabinetry was designed and installed in multiple locations, and tile and other finish work was laid out and installed with great attention to detail. Measures taken to improve energy-efficiency included the use of a blower-door-test and infrared camera technology to guide air-sealing efforts, insulation with dense-pack cellulose, installation of a new high-efficiency hydro-air HVAC system with a heat-recovery ventilation system, and installation of LED and CFL lighting fixtures.
